A Beautiful Random Thought

Have you ever been highjacked by a thought, that seemed random?  Is there such a thing as random?  Is a coincidence just a coincidence? How about a few more questions while I’m on a role. To answer the first question; Chances are, if you are human you have experienced a “random” thought highjacking.  I don’t know about you but I have lots of random thoughts that float through my head.  Of course, what makes them random is that the thought does not match anything you are thinking about or doing.

As a follower of Jesus Christ, I am to “take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.” Because of this, I tend to think that most thoughts are not random.  I believe that humans are spiritual beings with an earth suit. Creator God is Spirit and those who desire to worship Him must “worship Him in spirit and truth.” All this to say, that I know from experience, that God will speak to us through our own thoughts. It is possible that that random thought you had was actually God talking.

Recently, I was highjacked by one of those random thoughts.  I was minding my own business one day and a thought came to my mind:

“you have children that you never got to see on earth, that you will see in Heaven.”

I was not thinking about Heaven nor was I even thinking about my amazing children.  Quickly I realized this is not random. This was God invading my mind with a beautiful hope-filled statement.  I was in awe for a few minutes just taking in that truth.  Even now, I am blown away by it.

If you have not put two and two together yet, My wife had two miscarriages. The experiences were not super dramatic or traumatizing. I do not mean to diminish the seriousness of miscarriages nor the feeling of loss they create for parents. After 20 plus years, it is something we don’t even think about anymore.

Think about it; children that never make it into this world are in Heaven.  If you are a Christ follower and have experienced a miscarriage, you likely have had thoughts like this one.  I am sure that this kind of thinking has been a huge part of your healing through the trauma.

I have two children waiting for my arrival! Do you have children waiting in Heaven for your arrival?

How do you know if you will be in Heaven one day?

  • Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:5
  • Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies. John 11:25

One more from the book of John, “But those who embraced him and took hold of his name were given authority to become the children of God!”  Jesus made a way for all who believe in Him to spend eternity with him.

Another passage of the Bible that I have always loved and been intrigued by is found in Hebrews 12:1-3:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

There are a number of interpretations of the “cloud of witnesses.” I personally believe they are saints that have gone to heaven ahead of me.  I think that they are relatives and others who were instrumental in my life’s journey.  the last verse in Hebrews 11 talks about that those who have gone before us are waiting for us to meet them so that together we will be made perfect.  Is that not a beautiful thing to think about? We are surrounded by a great host of Christ followers who arrived in Heaven ahead of us. They are cheering us on in our race and waiting for our arrival because in some mysterious way we will complete them.

Having this knowledge we are encouraged by the writer of Hebrews to throw off everything that hinders us from running our race and finishing well.  It is just like a track runner, who is focused only on the finish line and the race at hand.  Creator God saw fit for you and me to make it to planet earth and He has a race for us to run.  He has put everything in place to empower us to finish with flying colors.  One of the things he has put in place is the “cloud of witnesses”.  I believe that my children that I have never seen before are part of the witnesses, cheering me on.

If you happen to have the fresh memories of the trauma from a miscarriage, I hope that you will find this article encouraging and life-giving to your journey of healing. Many things in this life cannot be explained.  The Bible tells us that “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus.”  Many terrible things that occur in our lives and the world are simply the results of sin being present in our world.  The good news is that there is a Redeemer who is Jesus. I pray that you will find Jesus in the midst of your pain helping you to get back up and run your race and finish well…after all, you have amazing cheerleaders cheering you on, your own child or children.
